About

Matt Searles

After a very brief and non-illustrious career as a French teacher, I studied theology at Oak Hill College, after which I served as assistant pastor at Dundonald Church. I then moved into theological training, working for 9 years as Director of Training for the South Central Gospel Partership, alongside which I studied for a DMin in Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Then for 2 years I taught Biblical Studies on the seminary programme at Crosslands Training.

Alongside continuing to teach theology in a variety of contexts, I am currently training as a mindfulness teacher, with Mindfulness UK. I have found mindfulness incredibly helpful to me personally, but I am aware that many Christians are wary of mindfulness.

My goal on this site, and through the courses that I plan to run, is to introduce Christians to many of the helpful insights and practices of mindfulness, but with 2 key distinctives:

  1. I will ensure that all aspects of what I teach are in line with Scripture, and promote devotion to Christ - thus there will be some aspects of other mindfulness courses that will NOT be present here.

  2. I will give theological explanations for the different ideas and practices, showing that much of ‘mindfulness’ is in fact a natural outworking of what the Bible says it means to be human.

This site and the courses I plan to run are aimed at Christian believers. If you are looking for a more non-religious approach, I recommend the MBCT course developed by Professor Mark Williams, and the book that accompanies it, ‘Mindfulness’ by Mark Williams and Danny Penman.
